Average Salaries for MCSE Professionals

The Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) credential can verify your ability to design and implement computer infrastructure using Microsoft servers. Successful certification candidates typically need 1-2 years of experience working with relevant hardware and software before sitting for certification exams. There are five tests total, and candidates can pursue certification in one of eight specialty areas: desktop infrastructure, server infrastructure, business intelligence, data platform, SharePoint, communication, messaging and private cloud.

Network and Computer Systems Administrator

The BLS reported that network and computer systems administrators earned an average salary of $89,460 as of May 2020. With MCSE certification, systems administrators earned an average of $71,000 as of March 2021, according to PayScale.com. These professionals' job duties can include determining an organization's network and computer system needs, installing server hardware and software, evaluating system performance and troubleshooting problems with connectivity. Not surprisingly, it's one of the most common job options available to MCSEs. These positions are available to certification candidates who pursue the desktop infrastructure, private cloud, communication and messaging specialties.

Database Administrator

MCSEs who earn the data platform certification can work as database administrators who use their knowledge of relational databases and SQL programming languages to create databases, monitor performance, back up data, update permissions and modify database structure, among other tasks. In May 2020, database administrators' average salary was $101,090, per BLS figures.

Computer Systems Analyst

The business intelligence and SharePoint specialties are designed to ensure certification candidates possess the skills needed to help an organization meet its information and data sharing needs. Successful examinees can put this knowledge to use as computer systems analysts who install and configure server infrastructure designed to help a business mine organizational data or deliver content over its intranet. Computer systems analysts earned an average of $99,020 per year as of May 2020, according to the BLS.

Information Security Analyst

MCSEs who pursue the server infrastructure specialty also have the option of working as information security analysts. The BLS reported that these IT professionals earned average salaries of $107,580 in May 2020. Information security analysts use their knowledge of an organization's server infrastructure to implement security settings and install software designed to protect its networks.
