Job Duties for Radiologist Assistants

As a radiologic assistant, you'll support radiologists in the daily operations of the radiology unit, department or office. It's your job to help the radiologist manage, assess and prepare patients for exams. You'll also perform examinations and adhere to procedures established by the radiologist.

Other duties will include making initial observations about images and evaluating the quality of images. As part of the radiology team, it is your primary responsibility to help expedite radiological services so the radiologist may focus more time on interpreting and reporting the images.

According to the BLS, the mean annual salary for these workers was $57,510 in May 2014. The annual earnings for the 10th-90th percentile range were $37,610-$80,080, with a median salary of $55,870, according to the BLS.

Salary by Industry

The BLS reported the top-paying industries in May 2014 for radiologic technologists were commercial and industrial machinery and equipment rental and leasing; colleges, universities, and professional schools; and nursing care facilities. The annual mean wages were $72,500, $65,920 and $64,750, respectively. General hospitals and offices of physicians had the highest employment levels, with mean salaries of $58,610 and $53,560, respectively.

Salary by State

Your salary may vary by state. The BLS noted the top paying states for radiologist assistants in May 2014 were California at $73,550 a year; the District of Columbia at $72,530; and Massachusetts at $70,010. Alaska was next, with an annual mean salary of $68,870.

Low-paying states had mean salaries of $26,510-$49,250 at that time. Alabama, Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa, Arkansas and Tennessee were some examples.

Salary by Experience

PayScale.com reported that entry-level workers in this field earned $31,916-$57,645 in September 2015, and those who had 5-10 years of experience made $36,720-$62,828. Salaries rose to $38,962-$69,565 with 10-19 years of experience and $40,811-$74,219 with 20 or more years of experience.

Job Outlook

The BLS reported a fast growth rate of 9% for radiologic technologists over the 2014-2024 decade. There were 197,000 workers in this field in 2014, and this number was expected to increase by 17,200 in 2024. California, Texas, New York, Florida and Pennsylvania had the highest job concentration in the field in May 2014.
