U.S. News and World Report

U.S. News and World Report is perhaps the most well-known publication listing the top 100 colleges in America. This news magazine has been publishing an annual top 100 colleges list since the mid-1980s. The 'Best Colleges' list appears each year both in a print issue and on the publication's website (www.usnews.com). The magazine breaks down its rankings into several categories, including best national universities and best graduate schools.

The Princeton Review

Using surveys of students and administrators from over 600 colleges, The Princeton Review, a company offering educational test preparation, compiles a list of 100 'Best Value Colleges'. Ratings are listed in the areas of academics, financial aid and overall costs of each college. Colleges are listed in two separate lists, as either public or private schools. The company publishes these results in a trade paperback format.

Forbes Magazine

Forbes Magazine began publishing a list of 'America's Best Colleges' in 2008. The list also appears on the magazine's website (www.forbes.com). The rankings of the top 100 colleges in America are based on five criteria. The criteria are: student satisfaction, graduation rate, number of awards bestowed on faculty and students, student loan debt and postgraduate success.
