What You Need to Know

Earning a certificate or associate's degree could prepare you to work as an EMT. Certificates may require between one and three semesters of study, and they include classroom and field training. Associate's degree programs may take two to three years to complete. J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (JSRCC)

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College's School of Nursing and Allied Health offers an entry-level EMT certificate program at the downtown campus, in addition to more advanced levels of EMT training. The basic EMT certificate can be obtained in one or two semesters and includes eight credit hours of clinical and field instruction and additional coursework in anatomy and physiology. You can enroll in the 19-credit EMT intermediate certificate program after completing the basic EMT curriculum or obtaining Virginia EMT-Basic certification. JSRCC also offers an EMT - Paramedic certificate that will take you two additional semesters to complete after you earn the intermediate certification.

John Tyler Community College

John Tyler Community College is the fifth largest community college in Virginia and offers an intermediate EMT training program at its Chester, VA, campus. During the three semesters of study, you'll complete the EMT - Basic course in addition to studying trauma care, EKG reading and other advanced life saving topics. Clinical and field internships are required in the last semester of the program. Upon completion, you should be prepared to receive national and state certification at the EMT-I/99 level.
