University of Illinois at Chicago
To participate in the school nursing certificate program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), you'll need a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a Bachelor of Science in another discipline. If you have a bachelor's in a field other than nursing, you must also have completed some core nursing courses and you must be licensed as a registered nurse (RN).
UIC allows you to start its program in the fall or spring. Studying on a part-time basis, you should be able to complete this certificate program in two or three semesters. As part of the program, you'll study child psychology, child development and legal issues that affect school nursing. You'll also be required to complete a clinical internship program as a school nurse.
Rutgers College of Nursing
The College of Nursing at Rutgers offers two ways for aspiring school nurses to earn a certificate. The first path is for registered nurses who already have a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), B.S. or BSN degree. In this program, you'll study subjects that include holistic healing, health education teaching and educational psychology. Both online and on-campus participation are required.
The second path allows you to earn your school nursing certificate as a minor while you simultaneously work toward your BSN. The program features many of the same courses found in the post-baccalaureate program. While it has some options for online study, you'll need to complete some courses on campus, in addition to meeting in-person practicum requirements.
Slippery Rock University
Slippery Rock University, located in Pennsylvania, offers a school nurse certification program that is made up of 21 credits of online graduate-level coursework. The program's timeline is flexible, and you can take three or six credits per semester as your schedule allows. To apply, you must have earned a BSN and be a registered nurse.
The coursework will teach you to work with children with severe developmental disabilities, mild behavioral issues and special education needs. You'll also have to complete a 100-hour practicum. Prior to undertaking your practicum, you'll need to pass FBI background and Pennsylvania police checks, have current CPR certification and show proof of personal malpractice insurance.
