TSU began offering its cross-disciplinary Ph.D. in Materials Science, Engineering and Commercialization program in the fall of 2011. Programs may also require candidates to serve as teaching or graduate research assistants, for which they often receive financial support. UT Austin offers an integrated dual-degree Ph.D./M.D. program in biomedical engineering with the University of Texas Medical Branch. Students spend the first two years of the program in medical school. The next three years are spent taking biomedical engineering courses, while completing their dissertation and clinical research.
