Associate's degrees typically take two years to complete and include nursing classes with general education requirements. Bachelor's degrees could take between one and four years to complete, depending on your prior education. Master's degrees in nursing are also available, and these degree programs could lead you to a career as a nursing manager, educator or nurse practitioner.

Associate's Degree Programs in Nursing in Memphis

Southwest Tennessee Community College

This Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program, which qualifies someone to take the NCLEX-RN exam for becoming a registered nurse, is offered through two tracks of study. Students with previous practical nursing education and experience may take the 3-semester LPN mobility track, which requires certain prerequisite courses in anatomy and microbiology and a nursing transition course in addition to the family, pediatric, mental health and advanced adult nursing courses found in the generic track. The generic track, for those without prior nursing education, adds general education, basic nursing and basic adult health coursework to the LPN mobility track curriculum.

Bachelor's Degree Programs in Nursing in Memphis

Baptist Memorial College of Health Sciences

This BSN program offers a traditional 4-year plan for students new to nursing. The curriculum is split between general studies and 63 credit hours of nursing courses that includes psychiatric, community health, maternal, neonatal and pediatric nursing. Licensed registered nurses who wish to earn a bachelor's degree can take the RN-to-BSN program over three trimesters after general education courses are complete. Classes in the traditional plan can be taken either in the daytime or in the evening. Baptist College of Health Sciences requires all students to participate in co-curricular activities furthering the Christian mission of the university; students in the 4-year program must participate in 10 such activities, while RN-to-BSN program students would need to participate in one activity for each semester of enrollment.

This cohort-style RN-to-BSN degree is offered to registered nurses as part of the professional studies evening courses at Christian Brothers University. The existing licensure qualifies RN-to-BSN students for 30 credits, and the remaining nursing courses cover professional practices and community health nursing. The program is a mix of online classes and in-person instruction, with practicum requirements fulfilled outside of the student's normal job duties at any healthcare facility that meets university requirements.

Students can complete this program through one of three tracks, depending on their academic goals and previous academic experience. First-time freshmen can pursue a traditional bachelor's degree with 66 credits of upper-division nursing classroom and practicum courses covering general nursing theory and practice, as well as nursing for specific populations, such as children, expectant mothers, oncology patients and the elderly. Students who already hold a first bachelor's degree in another discipline can earn the BSN under an accelerated schedule, taking major coursework over 16 months without the general education curriculum. Current registered nurses follow the RN-to-BSN program, earning up to one year of credit for previous nursing courses, reducing the number of nursing credits taken at the University of Memphis.

Master's Degree Programs in Nursing in Memphis

University of Memphis

Applicants with a bachelor's degree in a non-nursing discipline need to complete a structured series of 4 bridge courses before entering the graduate degree program. All of the MSN concentrations require a 9-credit core curriculum comprising courses in policy, research and scholarship. Master's degree candidates in the family nurse practitioner concentration must complete at least 500 clock hours of residency and practicum, while other concentrations require 240 or 360 clock hours. All candidates must either pass comprehensive exams in their concentration or defend an original written thesis in the final semester of the program. The Regent's Online Degree Program (RODP) version of the MSN program allows students to take the classroom portion of the program through distance learning and fulfill the residency and practicum requirements through preceptors whom the applicant identifies and qualifies during the admissions process. The school also offers a 15-credit family nurse practitioner post-master's certificate program.
