If you are interested in earning a bachelor's or master's degree in criminal justice, Alaska has three public universities that offer such programs. The program and school requirements, along with other relevant information, is provided below.

What You Need to Know

You could earn a bachelor's degree in about four years, and your coursework would include criminal justice core and elective courses with general education classes. Internships while studying in this program could give you an edge when looking for employment.

Master's degree programs are also available. These programs often take two or three years to complete, and most have a time limit for how long you can be a student in the program. You may be required to complete a capstone project or internship in these programs.

Criminal Justice Bachelor's Degree Programs in Alaska

University of Alaska Anchorage

The program at this school is located in the College of Health and Social Welfare's Justice Center. The curriculum was designed to give you leadership, research and analytical skills by teaching you foundations in law enforcement, the court system and corrections. Internships are encouraged, and you can take advantage of this opportunity in your junior or senior year. You'll need at least a 2.5 GPA to participate, and some agencies may require you to undergo criminal background checks prior to acceptance.

The program at this school is offered through the College of Liberal Arts and also covers law enforcement, the court system and corrections - the three components of the criminal justice system. You can take advantage of internship opportunities at this school once you have the permission of the internship director. Some of the topics you study include gender and crime, juvenile delinquency, comparative criminology, procedural law issues and addiction.

The master's program at this Fairbanks school is web-based to accommodate working professionals and distance learners. You can choose to earn your degree through either a capstone project or thesis program. Some of your core courses include studies in criminal justice system management ethics, the media and public relations, enlisting community resources in restorative justice and criminal justice policy.

Administration and management of criminal justice organizations and community/restorative justice classes are mandatory, but you'll work with your advisor to select a third class that best fits your career goals.
