What You Need to Know

Students in the Indianapolis area may choose to complete emergency medical technician (EMT) - Basic training or go on to earn a degree as a paramedic. Basic EMT training may be completed in as little as one semester; paramedic training programs require two years of study. Admission requirements at the basic level include CPR certification; paramedic students must already hold EMT-Basic certification prior to enrollment. All EMT and paramedic programs in the Indianapolis area are offered by public schools, some two-year and some four-year institutions.

EMT-Basic Training in Indianapolis, IN

Indiana University-Purdue University - Indianapolis

EMT-Basic training is a regular course open to any student of IUPUI. After passing this course and the certification exam, you can work as an EMT. The EMT course trains you to use ventilators and automated external defibrillators, control patient bleeding, stabilize breathing and immobilize broken bones. You'll learn to assess medical conditions and provide pre-hospital treatment for allergic reactions, diabetic shock and behavioral emergencies. Since EMTs are often first on the scene at traffic accidents, you'll receive training in creating a safe environment by redirecting oncoming vehicles and setting up flares.

Ivy Tech Community College

Ivy Tech's Community College - Central Indiana offers basic and advanced EMT courses. In the basic EMT course, you'll learn the basic life support skills needed in emergency care and be prepared for certification as an EMT. Course topics include automatic defibrillation, non-visualized airway maintenance and basic pharmacology. The course consists of 144 hours in class, then 16 hours of observation in a hospital emergency department and an ambulance. Ivy Tech also offers an advanced emergency medical technician course.

Paramedic-EMT Training in Indianapolis, IN

Indiana University-Purdue University - Indianapolis

You'll be eligible to take Indiana's state certification test for EMT-paramedics after completing the associate degree program at IUPUI. Paramedics are authorized to practice out-of-hospital medicine in emergency situations. During this degree program, you will learn to assess medical situations and form treatment plans for patients with a variety of medical complaints. You'll acquire skills in procedures such as establishing airways and administering medications. On evenings and weekends, you will gain practical experience with area hospitals, ambulance services and fire departments.

Ivy Tech Community College

Acceptance to the paramedic program is separate from the college admissions process and is selective. Classroom instruction in airways, pharmacology and trauma combines with clinical experience in the associate's degree program in paramedic science. You'll use your skills in the real world during an internship on an ambulance. If you're already a certified paramedic, you need to take only seven general education courses to earn this degree.
