There are three levels of training for emergency medical technicians (EMTs), the highest of which is as a paramedic. Students interested in becoming paramedics in Illinois may choose to earn a certificate or an associate degree in the field. Some programs include the lower levels of training and require only that applicants be CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)-certified. Other paramedic programs are open only to currently certified EMTs. Illinois paramedic training programs are offered by two-year, public schools throughout the state. Black Hawk College

In the northwest part of Illinois, near the bordering state of Iowa, sits Black Hawk College. Its paramedic certificate program requires fours semesters and 50 credit hours to complete. Students must complete EMT-Basic training in the first semester before they embark on their paramedic studies. There are three levels of clinical studies and four levels of paramedic theory included in the program. Students partake in weekly lecture and lab hours. Graduates are prepared to take the NREMT or Illinois state licensure exams. Please note that there are additional book fees, which students enrolled in the program are required to cover.

Parkland's program is known as a selective admission opportunity, so it is only for EMTs who have been working in the field for a minimum of 300 hours or six months. If students do not already have an affiliation with a local EMS department, they must gain field experience locally before acceptance into the program. They must then take an exam similar to the NREMT-B, in order to gauge their knowledge level. Joliet's program requires 27.5 credit hours, which can be completed over five semesters. Students learn via a variety of lectures and lab studies as well as a clinical and field component, which may include ambulance training. Graduates are ready to take the NREMT or similar exams. The school also an associate degree program in paramedic emergency medical services.
