You must complete a nurse aide training program in order to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in Tennessee. Some community colleges and technical schools offer CNA training programs that take between 112 and 120 hours to complete. Chattanooga State Community College

The Center for Continuing Education at Chattanooga State Community College prepares you for a nurse aide position through a combination of classroom and clinical training. The program is offered twice a year, with classes meeting in the late afternoon. At the end of the program, you can sit for the state CNA examination.

The curriculum for this CNA program is based on regulations mandated by the Tennessee Department of Health and Environment. You take classes in resident rights, basic nursing skills and personal care skills, among other topics. The completion of 40 clinical hours in a nursing home is also required. This program is offered several times during the year, and classes and clinical experiences take place in the daytime.

Tennessee Technology Center at Hohenwald

Classes in the nurse aide program are offered on a part-time basis in the day or evening, depending on student interest. You can study anatomy and physiology, hygiene, infection prevention and human development. Practical skills are also discussed, such as methods for making hospital beds and helping patients with their personal needs. Additionally, you learn how to record blood pressure, pulse and temperature as well as observe patients' behavior. There's a waiting list for admission to this program.

In this CNA program, you learn how to provide basic patient care through classes, lab practice and supervised work experience in a health care facility. You also study anatomy, safety practices and infection control and learn to care for patients with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, AIDS, cancer and developmental disabilities, to name a few. Classes in this program also cover end-of-life care as well as restorative and rehabilitative care.
