The American Institute of Floral Designers

The AIFD is a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining the art of professional floral design. It administers the Certified Floral Designer (CFD) credential and offers membership, the latter of which first requires attaining the certification. AIFD also offers some online courses for both novice and experienced floral designers. It makes these courses available via Blackboard software, and you'll learn through instructional videos and slide shows. You'll also complete assignments and exams, as well as communicate through discussion boards.

An introductory floral design course is available online and covers the history of the field, commonly used foliage and floristry supplies. Other online courses focusing on design principles and techniques include study in topics like proportion, color, stem placement, space, contrast and form. Additional course options available online allow you to learn about everyday arrangements or personal flowers, such as corsages and bridal bouquets.

Floral Design Institute

Licensed by the Oregon Department of Education, the Floral Design Institute offers basic floral design, advanced floral design and wedding floral specialist courses online. It is a designated Education Partner of the American Institute of Floral Designers.

With the online courses, you'll receive an instructional DVD, a toolkit, books and supplies. You'll need to procure flowers, a calculator and a camera on your own. You'll design arrangements and then submit photos digitally for review.
