Foothill College

Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, CA, offers an online Associate of Arts (A.A.) in Geography. This degree program introduces you to various natural and man-made features of the planet and examines physical and cultural environments found all over the world. You'll also be trained to use maps, graphs and GIS to decipher spatial information. The curriculum features core courses in physical, human, economic and world regional geography, as well as support and elective courses covering anthropology, economics, history, civilization and politics. Foothill College uses Etudes software to present online lectures, discussion forums and exams.

Park University

You can earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Geography online through Park University, located in Parkville, MO. This is a degree completion program, requiring you to have some previous college experience before enrolling. Through this degree program, you'll analyze practical, philosophical and theoretical aspects of geography as a means of comprehending Earth's natural environments and ways humans affect them.

You'll be required to take core courses in cultural, physical and North American geography, natural disasters and GIS. You must also choose electives from a list that includes courses in the geography of continents, such as Africa and Asia, as well as classes in military geography, global sustainability, meteorology, oceanography and other subjects. Park University also requires you to choose a minor. Options related to geography include geoscience, global sustainability and GIS. Students are assigned an e-mail account and receive a user ID and password to access online classes and material. Classes are offered five times a year in 8-week terms.

University of Denver

The University of Denver's Department of Geography offers an online Master of Science in Geographic Information Science (MSGISc). You're expected to have a bachelor's degree before entering this program; if your baccalaureate program did not include an introductory GIS course, you'll need to take one through the university or another school. However, if you already have appropriate work experience, you may not need to take this course.

Besides study in physical, cultural and human geography, you'll participate in an in-depth examination of GIS, global positioning systems and remote sensing. The 48 credit-hour curriculum contains courses in GIS database design and project management, geographic statistics and remote sensing, as well as a capstone project.

You also have the option of earning a GIS certificate of advanced study online, which can be applied to the master's degree program. As a graduate of this program, you'll be able to use GIS to analyze spatial data from specific locations to facilitate the management of public utilities, natural resources and environmental impact.
