Veterinary science is concerned with treating, preventing and learning the causes of animal diseases. Veterinary science programs are focused on statistics, biochemistry, genetics and pharmacology. While there are no veterinary science programs within the San Antonio area, there is a 2-year degree program available in the closely related field of veterinary technology. This program results in an Associate of Applied Science degree. The same community college also offers a certificate program for prospective veterinary assistants. While a certificate could teach you basic clinical skills, you will be required to hold at least an associate degree when pursuing certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of Texas. Studies in the associate degree program will involve classroom and clinical instruction and offers hands-on learning experiences in the care of small and large animals. You can learn how to assist during surgical procedures, administer anesthesia and collect and test specimens.

Certificate Programs in San Antonio

Palo Alto College

Located in San Antonio, Palo Alto College's veterinary assistant certificate program is open to a limited number of applicants. While earning your certificate won't prepare you for the Registered Veterinary Technician examination, all of the courses can be applied to the college's associate's degree program. Once accepted, you're required to have a physical examination, pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis and tetanus prophylaxis before beginning your first term in the program. While enrolled, you'll study software applications, veterinary medical terminology, clinical management and veterinary physiology.

Associate's Degree Programs in San Antonio

Palo Alto College

The associate's degree program at Palo Alto College will prepare you to work as a Registered Veterinary Technician. Palo Alto's program was accredited in 1998 by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities of the American Veterinary Medical Association, which means that after graduating, you'll be well-prepared to take the Texas State Registered Veterinary Technician examination and the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to become a Registered Veterinary Technician.

The program is open to a limited number of students, all of whom will be required to have a tetanus and pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis as well as a physical examination before starting the program. Coursework will consist of veterinary nutrition, parasitology, psychology, radiology and pharmacology.
