Overview of MBA in Professional Accountancy Programs

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Professional Accountancy combines the curriculum of a master's degree in accounting with the business management curriculum of an MBA, preparing students for management-level jobs in accounting firms. MBA programs in accountancy are usually designed for students who did not major in accounting as undergraduates. These programs may take longer than the Master of Science in Accountancy that is recommended for students who have undergraduate accounting work. Master of Business Administration in Professional Accountancy degree programs qualify graduates to take the CPA exams and prepare students for careers with major accounting firms.

Rutgers Business School

Rutgers Business School in Newark, New Jersey, was the first school to offer a 14-month MBA in Professional Accounting. The curriculum does not require or assume prior study of accounting, catering to students with a bachelor's degree in a different field of study. Students complete a total of 66 credits in the MBA program.

CUNY Baruch College

The Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College offers a program leading to an MBA in Accountancy. The program is geared toward students without undergraduate degrees in accounting, and students take business classes alongside specialized accounting classes. To accommodate the education requirements for CPAs in New York, the MBA in Accountancy program has more coursework than other MBA programs at CUNY and does not include general education courses.

Canisius College

Classes in the MBA in Professional Accounting program at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, meet in the evenings, once a week for 16 weeks, to allow students to maintain a work schedule while earning their degree. The program requires 23 classes, and students can take some classes during the day to speed completion. Internships are not required; however, Canisius College's MBA in Professional Accounting program does offer internship opportunities with several types of organizations.

Indiana University - Bloomington

The Kelley School of Business at Indiana University - Bloomington has a 5-year program that combines a Bachelor of Science in a business discipline with an MBA in accounting. Students in business majors apply to the graduate program as juniors, without having to submit GMAT scores. The program includes a review course for the CPA exam and multiple opportunities to gain real-world experience through field studies and field consulting projects.
