Why IT Pays (Literally) for Students to Get Good College Grades

Getting good grades in college is an extremely helpful factor when it comes to earning a living. The better your grades in school, the better your chances will be to have a successful and rewarding career.

Getting Good Grades In College Pays Off

You may have heard the expression 'It pays to do well in school'. It's a nice sentiment but it's not meant literally, right? Wrong! Doing well can translate to savings and profit in a very real sense. There are in fact many ways that getting good grades can put more money in your pocket.

Work Study

Many colleges offer work-study programs to help you fund your time in school. The downside is that many colleges require you to have a certain comfort with your studies in order to participate. This means you need to demonstrate that you have enough room in your busy schedule, that you are able to work calmly on top of all that stress and that you can maintain a certain grade level. Get those grades up, and it'll be easier to make a dent in that college debt before you even graduate.

Scholarships

It's pretty well known that the better you do in school, the easier it is to get a scholarship. Good grades mean a wider spectrum of financial aid you can choose from, and a higher chance you'll be picked for those you do apply for. Some scholarships are only open to people who make it into honors societies or excel in a certain field. If you can give yourself the opportunity to get more money for college, why would you pass that up?

Good Student Discounts

Your tuition isn't the only thing you can save on with a good report card. Many auto insurance companies offer good student discounts. In short, if you have a certain number of B's and A's or just a high enough GPA, your insurance will cost less. Some food places, movie rental spots and even clothing stores offer free or discounted goods for a great report card, so be sure to ask around. If you're looking for an off-campus apartment, some landlords will give a discounted rent if you maintain a high enough GPA. If you're more of a kid at heart, some arcades also still offer free or discounted tokens in exchange for A's and B's. Yes, even for college kids.

City and State Programs

Recently, a few cities and states have begun offering money or contests for kids who excel in school. The idea is to promote improvement in areas where dropout rates have been high. If you improve from the previous report card, you may be eligible to win a prize if you're in the right district. One district even offered an hourly wage to kids who came in after school to study! Check to see if your state or city has any special incentives for hard working students. Even if you don't see the money directly, you and other students succeeding can mean better funding for your school. This means a better learning environment for you.

No Repeats

One of the biggest things that passing your classes does for you is to make sure you don't have to do anything over. You don't have to pay any lab fees again, you don't have to buy any new textbooks and you don't need to get more school supplies. In the bigger picture, it also means that you will be more likely to graduate on time, which keeps your tuition from growing. Many scholarships only fund you for the first four years, so getting out after those first four is in your best financial interests.

The Long Run

All this studying is supposed to lead somewhere, right? You graduate college, you get a job, you find a place to live and you start your real life. If you do well in your chosen field of study, you'll be better equipped to get a good job. If you do really well overall and get a title like valedictorian, potential employers are going to notice it on a resume. Speaking of resumes, some will also ask you for your GPA. The better your GPA, the better it reflects on you. Doing very well in school means that you come out a little ahead of other job-hunters, which can make your life down the road a little less expensive.
