What Can You Do with a Master of Science in Nursing?

Career and Technical Education Teachers, Secondary School

Career and technical education teachers in secondary school educate and train students in areas including healthcare. Educator duties may include creating lessons, teaching students through lessons and practice, and guiding students throughout courses. These educators often need at least a bachelor's degree and relevant work experience. Graduates of an MSN who have work experience may qualify, especially if their MSN is concentrated in nursing education and they have extensively studied nursing education methods and objectives.

Medical and Health Services Managers

Graduates of an MSN program with a concentration in administration or leadership may qualify for positions in management, as master's degrees may be preferred by employers. Medical and health services managers have various duties depending on their position but may oversee departments or entire facilities. Nursing administrators, for example, may manage nurses' schedules, set departmental goals, and ensure regulatory compliance. Related MSN programs may provide candidates with instruction in communication, conflict resolution, compliance, and healthcare economics.

Nurse Midwife

Nurse midwives provide primary and cooperative care to women, including assistance during childbirth, reproductive counseling, gynecological examinations, and patient education. Nurse midwives usually need a master's degree, such as an MSN with a nurse midwife concentration. MSN programs with these focus areas provide an exploration of women's healthcare topics, which may include reproductive health and therapies, genetics and diseases specific to women, as well as best practices.

Nurse Practitioner

Nurse practitioners often provide primary healthcare to specific groups or populations, including psychiatric/mental, adult, pediatric, and family. Nurse practitioners need at least a master's degree, often with a nurse practitioner focus area related to their field of practice.

Postsecondary Teachers, Nursing

Graduates of an MSN program may qualify to teach at community colleges, which sometimes require educators to hold at least a master's degree. Applicants whose MSN focus area is in education may have a better preparation and understanding of nursing curriculum, instructional methods, and training for clinical practice. Nursing educators in postsecondary settings may create course structure, select course materials, and develop learning assessments that meet course requirements. Postsecondary nursing teachers may instruct students online, in a classroom, as well as in lab or other environments.
