Job Description

Being a teacher isn't just about instructing your students during class time. You will also create lesson plans to give you a basic template to follow throughout the year, but you will likely have to adjust them due to scheduling changes or your students' needs. Additionally, you'll track your students' progress through the use of in-class exams and homework assignments to keep their minds fresh when they leave the classroom.

How many students you see during the day will depend on their ages; younger students typically spend more time in one room, while older students travel to other teachers' classrooms. You can keep in contact with parents through scheduled or impromptu conferences to update them on behavior and academic performance.

Education and Training Requirements

Once you decide to become a teacher in Alaska, you will need to start a bachelor's degree and state-approved teacher preparation program. You could choose to complete both at the same time through a bachelor's degree program that matches the grade level and subject you're interested in teaching. You may be able to take some of your classes online depending on your choice of campus, but you will need to attend a student teaching experience and internship in person. Examples of Alaska teacher certification degree programs include:

  • B.A. in Elementary Education (K-8th grade)
  • B.A. in Secondary Education (7-12th grade)
  • B.M. in Music Education (K-8th, 7-12th, and K-12th grades)
  • B.A. in Special Education

If you want to pursue a state-approved certification program at the post-baccalaureate level, you can look into Master of Teaching and Master of Education programs in many of these fields. There are also post-baccalaureate and graduate certificate programs in areas such as secondary education, educational technology, and special education.

Exam Requirements

To gain your certification in Alaska, you will need to pass several exams. All educators need to earn a satisfactory score on a basic competency exam, such as the ACT, SAT or Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam, which you can take in three separate appointments or one testing session. You will find subtests in reading, math, and writing on this exam.

Your student grade and subject will determine the other tests you need to take. If you plan to teach second grade, for example, you would choose the Elementary Education: Content Knowledge, Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, or Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects exam. If you are teaching music to high school students, you would take the Music: Content Knowledge or Music: Content and Instruction exam.

Certification Requirements

You will need to complete a background check for criminal activity after finishing your degree and passing all your required exams. You can then obtain the Alaska initial teacher certificate. You're allowed to teach with this credential for two years, and before you upgrade to the next level, you can extend it once. To advance to the professional teacher certificate, Alaska requires you to have two years of teaching experience and to complete courses covering multiculturalism and Alaska studies. Once you convert your certificate into a professional teacher credential, you will need to renew it every five years after taking six credits of coursework.
