Alternative Paths to Teacher Licensure in Louisiana

The state of Louisiana is addressing its need for more teachers by offering alternative pathways to become a certified educator. There are three different options that give professionals and college graduates who have a bachelor's degree a way in which to be licensed to teach. Schools offering Teaching & Learning degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Different Ways to Become a Teacher in Louisiana

Through innovative alternative certification programs, the state of Louisiana offers potential teachers different ways in which to become certified. Community professionals and candidates with a bachelor's degree can earn certification through three options. An education degree is not needed for alternative certification candidates, just a desire to share their talents and expertise to make a difference in students' lives. Approved educator preparation program providers are available at various locations across the state.

Education

Louisiana offers a post-baccalaureate alternative pathway for teacher certification. The alternative teaching preparation program was designed to meet the state's need for more teachers. This path of teacher preparation is a good choice for candidates who already have a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree. Programs will result in teacher certification for those with degrees in a non-education field. Some candidates may have the opportunity to earn a master's degree in their field while undertaking teacher preparation classes.

State Licensure

Praxis exams are required for teacher certification in Louisiana. Teacher candidates must pass all three Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators. This includes the academic areas of reading, writing and math. In addition, the Praxis test Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam is also required. This exam tests candidates in specific content areas.

Some candidates may qualify to use their ACT and SAT scores instead of taking the Praxis 1 PPST Exams or Core Academic Skills. The scores needed for this option are an ACT composite score of 22 or an SAT combined verbal and math score of 1100 or higher (New SAT) or 1030 or higher (pre-March 2016 SAT).

Specific Alternative Certification Programs

There are three types of alternate teaching programs for college graduates and professionals who would like to become certified to teach in Louisiana: The Practitioner Teacher Program, The Master's Degree Program, and the Certification-Only Program. These programs of alternative certification are offered at colleges and universities throughout the state. While each school will have specific course offerings, here is an overview of the programs:

The Practitioner Teacher Program can be completed in one academic year and is also offered online at some colleges. A teaching job must be secured by the candidate prior to the internship part of the program.

Completion of the Master's Degree Program will result in a Master of Arts degree as well as Louisiana state teaching license. Students must meet graduate school admission requirements and complete two semesters of internship practice teaching.

The Certification-Only Program requires a bachelor's degree in any non-education field. Students may be able to work as full-time school teachers after completion of some of the coursework while they continue to earn a Louisiana teaching certificate.
