Type E Early Childhood Certificate

If you prefer to work with some of the youngest students in Alaska, the state offers the Type E Early Childhood Certificate. You can renew this credential every five years, but it restricts you to working in a preschool or serving as a teacher's aide in other schools. There are two levels of Type E Certificates, with the first being awarded after finishing at least 30 college credits in a certificate/diploma coupled with a minimum of 400 hours of practice under a certified teacher. To earn an Associate II certificate, you need the previous certificate level and an associate degree in early childhood education.

Type M Limited Certificate

You can teach with this certificate if you are a professional who has expert knowledge in a specific subject. Type M Limited Certificates are issued by Alaska if you don't have a bachelor's degree but can demonstrate advanced proficiency in one of three subjects. You can teach Alaskan native language or cultures if you have at least four years of experience in the area, including reading knowledge of a specific native language. At least four years of experience in a trade or vocation will qualify you to teach in your subject area, and you could also teach military science if you meet the qualifications for a U.S. Department of Justice Junior ROTC instructor.

Troops to Teachers

If you are a returning soldier who is looking for a new civilian career, Alaska participates in the Troops to Teachers program, which assists with the transition into civilian life. Upon entering the program, you can search for a teaching position in a public school, a charter school, or a school widely populated with Native American students. You will still need to go through Alaska's regular certification process as part of the program. You will need a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the academic subject you plan to teach, or at least 30 credit hours to teach career and technical education.
