Education Requirements

Aspiring art teachers must complete a bachelor's degree program at an accredited university. This requirement remains the same, no matter what grade level they intend to teach. Students should get their bachelor's degrees in an art field, such as visual arts or art education. Art degrees cover a variety of art mediums and methods, granting students a wide breadth of visual arts knowledge.

Completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program is also required. These programs offer courses in education that focus on the methodology and practice of lesson planning, student assessment, and classroom management as well as general education policies and issues. Teacher preparation programs also require students to complete a student teaching assignment in schools prior to applying for a license.

Typically, art education majors at in-state universities offer both the necessary art and education courses needed to fulfill all licensure requirements.

State Examinations

Oftentimes, a basic skills test is required before being accepted into a teacher education program. The basic skills test requirement can be met by taking the Praxis CORE exam, which covers reading, writing, and math.

Ohio art teachers must also take the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) Art exam, which tests students on their content-specific knowledge of visual arts. Topics on this exam include foundations of art, art tools and techniques, art history, and art criticism. The test is a computer-based, three-hour exam and costs $105 to take.

Ohio also requires all teachers to pass a professional assessment in line with the grade levels they intend to teach. Since art teachers can teach any grade level, the appropriate assessment is the OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12). This test is also computer-based and costs $105 to take. The exam covers student development and learning, assessment, the learning environment, and instruction.

Application for Licensure

The final step aspiring art teachers must take is to apply for a teaching license. Licenses are managed by the Ohio Department of Education and require renewal. Students can apply for their first license once they have completed their degree, teacher training program, student teaching, and required state exams. This process requires applicants to submit their college transcripts, complete background checks, and pay the application fee.
