Job Description
Business education teachers work with students to help them learn and understand the basic fundamentals of business and marketing. Even though business education teachers can work with a variety of different students, they have similar responsibilities no matter what level of schooling that they teach. Some of their responsibilities include creating lesson plans, grading completed student assignments, tracking student progress, administering tests, interacting with students, maintaining their classrooms, and communicating with other staff and teachers. Depending on the school that employs them, these teachers may also need to attend faculty meetings, parent teacher conferences, or open house events.
Education Requirements
Before becoming a business education teacher in the state of New York, students will need to earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree. State-approved teacher preparation programs in business and marketing education include all of the required curriculum for teacher certification. However, students who complete at least 30 hours of business and marketing coursework, 18 hours of pedagogy classes and 40 days of student teaching in business or marketing as part of their college education can also qualify for certification. After completing these requirements, potential teachers will need to begin preparing for the exams required by the state.
Exam Requirements
There are three different exams that teachers in the state of New York will need to pass before they can apply for their certification. The New York State Teacher Certification Exam - Educating All Students Test (EAS) is used to measure a candidate's knowledge in areas such as liberal arts, science, teaching theory, and business. The next exam is the edTPA, which is a performance assessment used to judge if a candidate is ready to enter into the classroom setting for their first teaching job. Teachers will also need to take the Content Specialty Test (CST) - Business and Marketing or Safety Net Business and Marketing test. This test is used to measure a candidate's knowledge specifically in their teaching area.
Additional Requirements
In addition to the exam and education requirements listed above, there are a few other requirements before a candidate can apply for their initial certification. Potential teachers will need to have their fingerprint clearances completed with the New York State Department of Education. They will also need to complete the Dignity for All Students Act Workshop. Applicants who did not complete a state-approved teacher preparation program will also need to take the Child Abuse Identification Workshop and the School Violence Intervention and Prevention Workshop.
Certification Advancement and Renewal
Teachers with an initial certificate can advance to the professional certificate once they gain sufficient experience and complete a mentorship program. Completion of a master's degree program can also lead to a professional certificate.
However, if teachers need to renew their initial teacher certificate, they can do so one time by fulfilling one of three requirements. The first option is to provide proof that they do not yet have three years of teaching experience. The second option is to complete 75 hours of acceptable professional development or 50 hours in a Continuing Teacher and Leader Education program. Lastly, teachers can re-take and pass the content specialty test listed above within one year of applying to have their initial license renewed.
