Job Description

Business teachers in high school instruct students on concepts involving money and other finances. You could hold classes in accounting and teach students about economics or the stock market. Business is not as common as other parts of the curriculum, so you might have a limited number of students to instruct during the academic year. Your lesson plans might change due to administrative decisions involving school closings or other scheduling conflicts. You might hold conferences with parents of students throughout the year. Business teachers sometimes work in career and technical education schools, located separately from traditional high schools.

Education and Training Requirements

Direct educational paths to business teaching can be difficult to find in New Jersey. One option you may consider is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, followed by a path to teacher certification. The bachelor's degree program introduces you to the content you will teach to your students, including course topics such as spreadsheets, corporate finance, and marketing. After you complete this program, you can find separate teacher preparation programs to start during or after you find employment as a teacher. These courses may be offered on campus or online, allowing you to choose the delivery that fits your schedule.

Exam Requirements

All teachers in New Jersey have a basic skills requirement to fulfill. You can choose to submit your scores from the SAT or ACT, or you can take the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam. This three-part series of tests contains one section each for reading, writing, and math; you can take them all together, or sit for separate appointments for each section. Business teachers should also take the Praxis Business Education: Content Knowledge exam. You are free to use a calculator during this test.

Certificate Requirements

When you have earned your bachelor's degree, you can apply for a Certificate of Eligibility. This entry-level certificate allows you to look for jobs in New Jersey public schools. Once you have finished your student teaching experience, you can upgrade your credential to a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing. This is a crucial step up, as it allows you to enter the Provisional Teacher Process, an evaluation that takes two years. After you receive a recommendation from the state's education department, you can finally earn your Standard Certificate, which lasts for the duration of your teaching career.
