What Are the Job Duties of a Certified Yoga Instructor?

Certified yoga instructors teach and lead their classes in the style of yoga that they practice. Their classes may consist of one individual or a group of people. Teaching also includes adjusting students' poses so they do not injure themselves. Certified yoga instructors must be able to assist students with physical limitations to help them get into the proper poses.

What Are the Educational Requirements of a Certified Yoga Instructor?

Certified yoga instructors are not required to have a high school diploma, GED, or college education. However, Yoga Alliance requires that applicants complete a training course. The National Council for Certified Personal Trainers does not require one to complete any formal training or education, outside of CPR certification requirements, as long as one can pass the certification exam.

Who Certifies Yoga Instructors?

Just as there are multiple forms of yoga, there are multiple organizations that provide certification and credentialing of yoga instructors. Two such organizations are the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT) and Yoga Alliance. The NCCPT provides a certification in Vinyasa Flow Yoga. Yoga Alliance, the largest nonprofit that serves the yoga community, provides six credentials for yoga instructors: Registered Yoga Teacher 200, Registered Yoga Teacher 500, Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 200, Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 500, Registered Children's Yoga Teacher, and Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher.

How Does One Become a Certified or Registered Yoga Instructor?

To become a certified yoga instructor through the NCCPT one must be certified in cardiopulmonary certification and pass the Certified Yoga Instructor Exam. To become a registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance one must complete a training course through a registered yoga school. Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teachers must also fulfill a continuing education requirement every three years.

Yoga has a wide variety of styles. These include, but are not limited to, gentle yoga, spiritually-oriented yoga, flow yoga, alignment-oriented yoga, fitness yoga, hot yoga, and specialty yoga. Flow yoga, fitness yoga, hot yoga, and some forms of specialty yoga may be good for those who want a more physically demanding yoga class.
