Job Description

Kindergarten teachers work with students to help them learn the fundamentals, such as letter and number recognition, that they will need as they progress to grade school. These teachers have a number of different responsibilities, including maintaining a clean classroom, interacting with students, coming up with appropriate lessons and activities, monitoring the progress of their students, and communicating with school staff and parents. As with most teachers, they may also be required to attend meetings or conferences depending on the school that they work for.

Education Requirements

In order to become a kindergarten teacher in Delaware, students will need to first obtain a minimum of a bachelor's degree. Students will also need to complete a teacher preparation program that is approved by the state.

A bachelor's degree in early childhood education generally fulfills both of these requirements. Some areas of study for students enrolled in these programs include literacy instruction, childhood development, and classroom management. Many colleges also require candidates to complete some type of student teaching experience before graduation.

Exam Requirements

There are two different exams that are required before a teacher can apply to get their initial license in Delaware. The first is an approved performance assessment, such as the edTPA or PPAT exam. These exams are used to gauge how well a potential teacher will be able to impact their students' learning and help determine if they are ready for their first job.

The second is the Praxis exam, which will test a teacher's knowledge of the specific subject that they are planning to teach. The Praxis exam for kindergarten teachers is the Education of Young Children exam, and a score of 160 is needed to pass.

Application Requirements

Once teachers have completed the necessary education and testing requirements listed above, they must apply for an initial license through the Delaware Department of Education. Some of the required documents include college transcripts, including proof of student teaching, and official test scores. Once the application has been submitted, teachers will simply need to wait for their license, and then they can start looking for teaching jobs.

Advancing a License

To continuing teaching in the state of Delaware, a new teacher will need to apply for a continuing license before their initial license expires. To do so, they must complete a Comprehensive Induction Program (CIP). They must also take another approved performance assessment within the first two years of their initial license. Teacher's will need to have had no more than one unsatisfactory annual evaluation over the period of time that they held their initial license. Lastly, teachers will need to be considered employed in one of the Delaware public or charter schools.
