Degree Requirements

Aspiring music teachers must first earn a bachelor's degree in music education. Typically, these programs combine the necessary music training along with a required teacher preparation program. Students can choose to focus on instrumental music or on vocal music. Depending on the student's specialization, he or she will take courses in either vocal training or various instruments. Music students usually take courses in aural training, music theory, and music history. Most students also participate in performance ensembles of some kind.

The teacher preparation portion of the program focuses on training students in how to teach and requires the completion of a student teaching tenure. Classes in this part of the program cover teaching methods, pedagogy, student assessment, and classroom instruction. Some universities also offer observation sessions where students can observe real teachers prior to going into their own student teaching experience.

State Examinations

All students who wish to teach in Ohio must pass the appropriate state exams prior to applying for a license. For music teachers, a basic skills test, a music content exam, and a professional skills test are required.

To fulfill the basic skills test requirement, students can take the Praxis CORE exam. This test may be required before completion of the education degree, but it depends on the program.

The Ohio Assessments for Educators' music exam covers a wide range of topics including aural analysis skills, music theory, composition, music history, and music methodology. The exam lasts for about three hours and students pay a fee of $105 to take the test.

The professional assessment required is the OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12). This computer-based exam also costs $105 to take. It covers teaching subjects such as student development, classroom instruction, student assessment, and more.

Applying for Licensure
