Education Requirements for Standard Certification

The interested candidate must have at minimum a bachelor's degree in the area they are interested in teaching in addition to educator preparation. In this case, one may study Spanish in a major that includes an approved educator program from an accredited university. For example, universities may offer a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Education that leads to educator certification for prospective Spanish teachers. The Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA) maintains a list of approved institutions that provide these educator preparation programs and has a robust assessment regimen for these institutions.

Background Check

Candidates who are interested in becoming educators must pass a background check that is carried out by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This entails having fingerprints collected and run through national and federal databases. Fingerprints can be taken at the Oklahoma State Department of Education, at an approved collection location or at a local law enforcement agency. The cost of a background check is $53.94, and a background check done for the purposes of certification is only valid for a year. The results of the background check must be sent to the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

Exam Requirements

For those interested in becoming educators in Oklahoma, there are three competency-based assessments they must pass. These are the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET), the Oklahoma Subject Area Test(s) (OSAT) and the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Examination (OPTE). All three assessments are offered through the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA). Interested candidates can register for the exams online on the OEQA website where they will be informed of the relevant testing dates and sites.

The OGET is a basic skills exam focused on critical thinking and general knowledge such as reading, writing, and math. The OSAT is a subject-specific assessment; Spanish teachers must take the OSAT Spanish (119).The OPTE deals with professional knowledge and skills, such as classroom management, mild-moderate disabilities, communication, and ethics. Prospective foreign language teachers take either the OPTE PK-8 or the OPTE 6-12 based on the grade level they intend to teach.

Application Process

Once the candidate has satisfied all the above requirements, they are advised to access the Oklahoma Education Single Sign-On via the Oklahoma State Department of Education website in order to complete the application for certification. Alternatively, candidates can complete the certificate application form and submit the form as well as the supporting documents to the Oklahoma State Department of Education in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Educators with this certificate can renew it by submitting a certificate renewal application and paying the $50 certificate renewal fee. Renewal candidates must have worked in a school at least three of the last five years or complete academic credits (3 hours for two years of experience, 4 hours for one year of experience, and 5 hours for zero years of experience).
