Educational Requirements

Exam Requirements

Art teachers in Hawaii must prove basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Results from regionally accredited colleges and universities can be used in lieu of passing licensure tests; National Teachers Exam (NTE) Communication Skills (CS) General Knowledge (GK) tests can also be used to circumvent the need for licensure testing. In addition, teachers must also successfully pass the Praxis II Art: Content Knowledge Test (5134) with a score of at least 158.

Credential Requirements

All Hawaii teachers must possess a Standard Hawaii Teaching License either by completing an online application or submitting a paper application via mail. All standard licenses last for five years. Teachers may also apply for an Advanced Hawaii Teaching License if they possess the following:

  • At least five years' teaching experience within the last eight years in either Hawaii or another state
  • Active Standard License in Hawaii (or another state)
  • Master's, specialist, or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited college or university OR
  • Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

Advanced licenses are valid for 10 years.

Credential Renewal

Credentials for Hawaii art teachers must be renewed before the end of the licensure period. Standard licenses can be renewed either online or through mailed application every five years, and teachers are required to show proof of Verification of Satisfying Hawaii Teacher Performance Standards Documentation and Verification of Experience for Renewal only when audited to do so. Teachers are expected to prove that they meet all 10 of the Hawaii Teacher Performance Standards, including:
