Become an ESL Teacher in West Virginia

To teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in schools in the state of West Virginia you must hold a bachelor's degree and fulfill some other test and license requirements. The process is detailed below.

West Virginia ESL Teacher Licensing

English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers will assist students whose first language is not English. Although there are alternative certification routes, this is the traditional program and it includes passing two Praxis certification exams.

Traditional Certification Route

Prospective teachers who pursue the traditional certification route will earn their bachelor's degree through an approved educator preparation program. Teaching applicants will need to earn passing scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam. This requirement may be waived for some applicants, including those with master's degrees, qualifying ACT, SAT, or GRE scores, a current, out-of-state teaching license, or NBTPS certification. ESL applicants will also a need passing score of 155 on the Praxis English to Speakers of Other Languages exam (Prek-Adult). They will have 2 hours to answer 120 multiple-choice questions.

Required Clearances

West Virginia requires all teaching applicants to pass both state police and FBI background checks. Individuals will need to go through the fingerprinting vendor IdentoGO. It should be be noted that applicants will need to undergo another background check even if they passed one for a student teaching assignment. In addition, licensed teachers will need to complete a background check when changing counties of employment if their current check is older than 90 days.

Initial Professional Teaching Certificate Application Process

Applicants will need to complete electronic form 20T, pay the processing fee, and provide supporting documentation such as their official transcripts and passing Praxis scores. It should be noted that applicants will need at least a 2.5 overall GPA. The initial professional teaching certificate is valid for three years and can be renewed.

Initial Professional Teaching Certificate Renewal

Teachers can apply for renewal of their certificate starting on January 1 of the expiration year. They will need to meet one of the below criteria for renewal:

  • Six college/university coursework credits
  • MA +30 salary classification
  • Age 60 or older

Teachers will also need a recommendation from their schools superintendent. Those who are not currently employed in a school may use their most recent education supervisor or current employer.

Acceptable College/University Coursework

ESL teachers can fulfill the coursework requirement with any credits that are applicable to their ESL certification. They can also compete eLearning courses in order to meet this requirement. Accepted coursework topics include those related to improving skills in their current certification area, those toward a master's degree, or those needed toward an additional certification area. All credits must be from an approved institute of higher education. Teachers must earn at least a 3.0 GPA or higher for all courses, with the exception of eLearning courses.
