State Requirements

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) sets the standard for becoming a principal in the state of Texas. According to the website, the TEA is a statewide agency that ensures public schools meet educational requirements. The responsibility of being a principal requires that a principal certificate is obtained to validate an individual's credentials for this position. There are several qualifications that the principal certification requires to meet the educational needs of children across the state.

These qualifications are:

  • Education: A candidate for principal in Texas must have a master's degree from an accredited university. It is important that the candidate confirm that their chosen university has met accreditation standards before investing their time into such a program. An accredited university is one that has met the evaluation criteria developed by the Department of Education.
  • Certification: A candidate must possess a current and authentic Classroom Teaching Certification from a TEA approved program. Obtaining a Classroom Teaching Certification will require a criminal background check.
  • Experience: A candidate must have at least two years of teaching experience in a classroom setting. This experience must be at a Texas accredited school.
  • Preparation: A candidate must complete a principal educator preparation program that is endorsed by the TEA. This program prepares candidates to take the state exam by focusing on specific topics. Some of these topics are: leadership skills, human capital management, ethics, and strategic planning.
  • Exams: A candidate must successfully fulfill examination requirements set forth by the TEA. Candidates must pass the TExES Principal (268) exam. If the candidate successfully passes this exam before August 31, 2019, the candidate will receive certification without any further requirements. If the candidate takes the TExES (268) exam on or after September 1, 2019, they are required to take the Performance Assessment for School Leaders (PASL) exam as well.

School District Requirements

Once the candidate has successfully obtained a principal's certification, they will need to research requirements and qualifications required by the school district for which they are applying. Some districts may require additional experience in a leadership role or even curriculum development. Experience as a vice-principal may also be required.

Plan

Becoming a principal in the state of Texas is a long process that requires an individual to commit and plan. It is important to plan for the state requirements to ensure that the candidate is aware of future changes in standards that may affect their certification process. Planning for more specialized and additional requirements from the district can help expedite the road to becoming a principal at the district of the individual's choice.
