Initial Teaching Certification in Kentucky

Kentucky offers two routes for initial teacher certification. The first is to earn a bachelor's degree through an approved education preparation program. The certification process includes completing an application, supplying official transcripts, earning passing scores on the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching exam and Praxis content area exam, and obtaining a signature to verify full-time work experience.

The Statement of Eligibility (SOE) gives you five years to obtain a position in a Kentucky school, with the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program required in the first year of work. You have the option to renew your SOE if you do not complete the internship in five years by either earning six graduate-level credits or retaking the required assessments for new teachers.

Substitute Teacher Certificate Eligibility

You will need to apply for a substitute teaching certificate via the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board. You will be eligible to apply for a substitute teaching certificate if you meet one of the below conditions:

  • Possess a previously valid state certificate for teaching that was granted after earning a bachelor's degree via an educator preparation program
  • Possess a current SOE for a state teaching certificate

Substitute Teacher Application Process

You will need to complete the Certification Application 2 (CA-2) if you possess an expired state teaching certificate. It requires an online payment through the Education Professionals Standards Board (EPSB). You will provide information such as your college attendance record, relevant work experience with a superintendent signature, and any other professional licenses or credentials earned in another state. It should be noted that you will need to provide copies of your out-of-state certificates as part of the application process.

Certificate Validity

Upon earning your certificate, you will only be eligible for substitute teaching positions. The state of Kentucky does not allow substitute teachers to serve as permanent replacements or part-time teachers.

Certificate Renewal Process

The first renewal of your substitute teaching certificate requires the CA-2 application. You will need 15 graduate-level college credits or half of the Continuing Education Option conditions. You will also need to provide one of the following for your renewal application:

  • Official transcript of college credits completed and a recommendation from the college of education official (if needed)
  • Superintendent's signature on your application confirming three years of relevant work experience

Emergency Substitute Teacher Process

Individuals can apply for a one-year emergency certified substitute through a Kentucky public school district. They must have either a bachelor's degree, 96 college credits with a 2.5 GPA, or 64-95 credits with a 2.5 GPA. Individuals must submit official college transcripts to the board of education and complete online certification trough the EPSB.
