Job Description

ESL educators teach English to students whose first language is not English. They also work with the students and the students' classroom teachers in order to ensure that the ESL students are able to learn the material and complete assigned work. They will meet with the student, the student's teachers, and parents to develop a program which will best assist the student in acquiring proficiency in English and that will help them to be successful in their classes. This program may involve individual tutoring, having the student leave the classroom for an ESL class, bilingual classes, or having the student take classes with peers, but with an ESL teacher available for support within the classroom.

Education

Those who want TESOL licensure must complete a bachelor's degree and an approved educator preparation program. Some of the skills learned through studying TESOL will include: teaching English to students of diverse language backgrounds, understanding how different cultural backgrounds affect learning and performance, and assessing second-language acquisition. Coursework will also include preparation for teaching students with dyslexia, substance addiction content, licensure exam preparation, and preparation for teaching in Ohio. Students will complete a minimum of 100 hours of field experience and at least a 12-week internship.

Initial Licensure

The initial teaching license in Ohio is the 4-year Resident Educator License. In order to apply for this license, candidates for TESOL licensure must pass two Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) exams: OAE Pedagogy Assessment: 004 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12) and OAE Content Assessment: 021 English to Speakers of Other Languages. The pedagogy assessment tests on knowledge of teaching, assessing student learning, student development and learning, and the professional environment. The content assessment covers language, language acquisition, teaching English as a second language, and assessing language learning.

Extension, Renewal, and Advancement

The next level of licensure is the 5-year Professional Educator License. The requirements for advancement are completion of a Resident Educator program, completion of a focused mentoring program, and a passing score on the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA). For those who do not meet these requirements after four years, the Resident Educator License can be extended for one year or renewed for four years. Extension or renewal will depend upon how long the educator needs to complete the requirements.
