Job Description

Middle school teachers educate students between elementary school and high school. Depending upon the district, middle schools can range from between grade 4 - grade 9. Typically, middle schools consist of grades 6-8. Middle school teachers work in both public and private schools. Middle school teachers build upon the education that students received in elementary school and prepare students for high school. They create lesson plans, teach classes, assign homework and projects, and grade homework and projects. They meet with students to help them with any difficulties they may be having with the course material. Teachers also meet with parents in order to give progress reports. They may also supervise students outside of the classroom, coach sports teams, and/or advise after-school clubs.

Education

In order to be a middle school teacher in Ohio, candidates must first earn a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and complete an educator preparation program. The educator preparation program is often part of the coursework required to earn a bachelor's degree in an educational field. This coursework will prepare candidates to take the certification exams. In addition to their coursework, those who study for a degree in education will also complete at least a 12-week internship and 100 hours of field experience.

Getting Certified

The exams required for certification will depend upon the subject and the grade level the candidate would like to teach. For their first teaching license, all candidates are required to take one assessment of professional (pedagogical) knowledge through the Ohio Assessments for Educators. These initial assessments are:

002 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Middle Childhood (4-9)

  • Candidates seeking Middle Childhood licensure (4-9)
  • Language Arts and Reading (4-9), Mathematics (4-9), Science (4-9), Social Studies (4-9)
  • Agriscience, Family and Consumer Sciences, Marketing, Integrated Business, or Technology Education

003 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Adolescence to Young Adult (7-12)

  • Candidates seeking Adolescence to Young Adult (7-12) licensure
  • Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Science, Integrated Social Studies
  • Agriscience, Family and Consumer Sciences, Marketing, Integrated Business, or Technology Education

004 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12)

  • Candidates seeking licensure to teach Computer Information Science, Dance, Drama/Theater, Foreign/World Languages, American Sign Language, Health, Library/Media, Music, Physical Education, TOSEL, Visual Arts

Candidates must also take subject-specific OAEs. Candidates who are seeking a license to teach grades 4-9 must also take the 090 Foundations of Reading exam. Candidates who want to teach world languages will also need to take an ACTFL/LTI World Languages Exam.

After passing their licensure exams, candidates will then apply for the 4-year Resident Educator License through the Ohio Department of Education's Connected Ohio Records for Educators system (CORE).

Renewal and Advancement Requirements

The Resident Educator License is valid for 4 years. Educators may renew their Resident Educator License for one year. This renewal is only for educators who:

  • Have not completed all four years of their Resident Educator Program, and/or
  • Have not passed the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA), and/or
  • Have not finished their focused mentoring program. Educators must complete these items during that year.

Educators may also renew their Resident Educator License for another four years. They can renew for another four years when:

  • They have completed less than two years of their Resident Educator Program, or
  • They have completed more than two years, but a one-year extension would not be enough time for them to complete the rest of the program.

In order to advance to the five-year Professional Educator License, educators must:

  • Complete 4 years of the Resident Educator Program
  • Pass the RESA
