Brandman University

Brandman University offers a three-year BSN to DNP program which can be specialized in either Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner or Family/Across the Lifespan Nurse Practitioner. The Psychiatric Mental Health concentration provides an overview of psychotherapeutic treatments and psychopharmacology, preparing graduates for work with patients who have mental health and psychiatric disorders, while the Family/Across the Lifespan concentration provides an overview of chronic, complex, and acute issues across human lifespans.

California State University - Fullerton

California State University at Fullerton offers a BSN to DNP program with a focus in Nurse Anesthesia, which can be completed in three years. The DNP program is a collaboration between CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, and CSU Los Angeles, enabling students to access courses and faculty from three schools, and it prepares graduates for work as nurse anesthetists (CRNAs).

Loma Linda University

Loma Linda University offers a BSN to DNP program that has five specialization options: Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (4 years), Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (4 years), Primary Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (4 years), Nurse Anesthesia (3 years), and Family Nurse Practitioner (3.5 years). The Loma Linda DNP program prepares graduates for careers in behavioral medicine, nurse anesthesia, and primary care for a variety of ages, including pediatrics, adult/gerontology, and family.

Point Loma Nazarene University

Point Loma Nazarene University has a BSN to DNP program that consists of online and on-campus curriculum and can be completed in around four years. The program consists of courses which include Applied Statistics and Data Analysis, Healthcare Policy Leadership, Informatics, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice Project, and it prepares graduates for careers as advanced practice nurses, nurse managers and directors, as well as faculty roles.

Samuel Merritt University

The University of California at Irvine has a BSN to DNP program with a Family Nurse Practitioner concentration that can be completed in three years through a hybrid curriculum. University of San Diego

The University of San Diego has a BSN to DNP program which consists of 67 to 83 credits and can be completed in three years of full-time study. The DNP program can be specialized in one of the following areas: Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Family Nursing Practitioner in Emergency Care, Pediatric/Family Nurse Practitioner, and Adult-Gerontology/Family Nurse Practitioner.

University of San Francisco

The University of San Francisco offers a BSN to DNP program that can be completed in four years through a hybrid curriculum and 1,000 hours of clinical practicum. The DNP program can be specialized in either Family Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner; students who complete the Family Nurse Practitioner BSN to DNP program can choose to also receive an MSN once they have completed relevant requirements.

Admission Requirements for a BSN to DNP in California

California schools that offer a BSN to DNP program require applicants to be licensed nurses, and they may require some professional nursing experience. Applicants may need to have completed certain prerequisite courses within their undergraduate work, such as biostatistics. Other program requirements may include an essay of personal intent, letters of recommendation, and a qualifying undergraduate GPA.

With a variety of schools to choose from in California, nurses who hold a BSN can complete a DNP program in around three or four years, and may be able to specialize in one of several areas within their DNP curriculum. Specialization tracks include mental and psychiatric health, pediatric, adult, and gerontological health, as well as nurse anesthesia; these specializations provide a customized learning experience for students based on their interests.
