BSN to DNP Programs in Georgia

Several schools in Georgia offer a BSN to DNP program option. Some programs may be conducted through physical courses, while others may combine online and on-site components. Read more below.

Augusta University

Augusta University offers a DNP for nurses who hold a BSN. The DNP program has four areas to choose from for a concentration: adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner; family nurse practitioner; pediatric nurse practitioner; and psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner.

Emory University

Emory University has a DNP program, which is available to nurses with a BSN. The DNP program develops nurses' existing clinical skills and healthcare knowledge, enabling them to become leaders in healthcare and healthcare improvement.

Georgia Southern University

Georgia Southern University provides a BSN to DNP program that gives students the option to exit after completing the initial courses (MSN components). Students can choose from several concentrations depending on their intended practice areas, including family, psychiatric, and primary care. This program may be completed largely online, but has several on-site components.

Georgia State University

Georgia State University offers a DNP program with a BSN-to-DNP track, which is completed both on campus and online. The DNP program helps nurses to effectively use evidence-based practices, work in groups, and lead teams, and takes around 3 to 4 years to complete.

Mercer University

Mercer University's DNP program applies advanced nursing practices to ready nurses for clinical positions as well as leadership and transformative roles. The BSN to DNP program takes around seven semesters, and can be specialized depending on a student's field of interest.

What Can You Do with a DNP?

Graduates of a DNP program may choose to advance their current nursing career by moving into a leadership or administrator role or they might consider other APRN specialty areas. Some possible career options, depending on their training, experience, and specialization choices, include:

Nurse Midwife

Nurse midwives, or CNMs, provide clinical care and services to women, such as family planning, prenatal, and gynecological exams. Nurse midwives may also perform deliveries, emergency care, as well as assist physicians with cesarean sections. DNP programs enable nurses to provide primary care, but some nurse midwives may also work with other caregivers. Concepts learned within a doctoral program such as genetics, women's health, and pediatric care are applied in nurse midwife positions.

Nurse Practitioner

Nurse practitioners, or NPs, may provide specialty or primary care, but may also work with other health professionals. NPs examine and treat patients, and advise patients on how to properly manage their health. Nurse practitioners may choose to work within a specific group such as adults, pediatrics, and psychiatric. DNP programs are built in large part for nurse practitioner positions, and many allow students to select their intended area of practice as a concentration (such as psychiatric or adult).

Postsecondary Teacher

Many community colleges hire educators who hold at least a master's degree, while universities may require applicants to hold a doctoral degree. In a postsecondary teacher role, individuals share their developed knowledge and skills with their own students by creating and implementing lessons, and providing guidance. As an educator, their role is to ensure that students gain sufficient understanding in the subject area; for those with a nursing education those subject areas will likely include nursing and healthcare topics. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median 2018 salaries for health specialty and nursing educators at the postsecondary level were $97,370 and $73,490, respectively.

Job Title Median Salary (2018)* Estimated Job Growth (2018-2028)*
Nurse Midwife $103,770 16%
Nurse Practitioner $107,030 28%
Postsecondary Teacher $78,470 11%

Students seeking to complete a DNP program directly from a BSN in Georgia can expect it to take around three years and may be able to specialize their curriculum based on their interests. A Doctor of Nursing Practice gives nurses one of the highest levels of knowledge in nursing and allows them to work in leadership positions as well as medical positions.
