How to Earn a DNP in a BSN to DNP Degree Program

The Doctor of Nursing Practice is one of two doctoral-level degree programs in nursing, and it may require research but does not prepare nurses for research-related careers. A BSN to DNP program allows registered nurses to bridge the gap between the entry-level and more advanced nursing jobs and often includes the following types of courses.

Epidemiology

This type of course introduces students to research design and epidemiologic measures used to track how health conditions affect different populations and how those heath conditions might change. In this class, students might learn about clinical and population-based health promotion, interpretation of health statistics and how to spread their message to different groups. Students may be asked to develop research projects or to improve existing methods.

Organizational Leadership

As an advance practice nurse, one may be responsible for administration-level work, and this course often introduces a registered nurse to the area of organizational leadership. Topics in courses like this may include financing in healthcare, the effects of leadership on healthcare delivery, and development of health policy. Students may be required to examine political, social, and historical factors that can affect healthcare delivery and policy creation.

Pharmacotherapeutics in Advanced Nursing

No matter which specialization a student chooses, they'll likely have to deal with pharmacologic agents and patients. Classes that focus on pharmacology for advanced nursing practice look at how different patient groups can be affected by these drugs. Drug selection, monitoring and treatment of patients are key issues in these courses. The legal aspects of an advanced practice nurse administering medication is usually a topic of discussion,as well.

Admission Requirements for a BSN to DNP Degree Program

Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a valid license to work as a registered nurse. The required grade point average for undergraduate work varies, depending on the school one is considering, and that range for minimum GPA typically is anywhere from 2.75 to 3.3. Paperwork often required includes transcripts of undergraduate work, a personal statement, professional curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation may be required. Students may also be required to submit scores from the Miller Analogies Test or the Graduate Record Examination, although not all schools require all applicants to submit test scores.

Whether a registered nurse in Wisconsin is interested in working as a nurse practitioner, in nursing administration, or education, a BSN to DNP program offers the study and practical experience to prepare for those options. No matter which school confers the degree, a Doctor of Nursing Practice is a terminal degree program that prepares students for careers in advanced nursing practice.
