Comparing Online BSN-to-DNP Degree Programs

BSN-to-DNP Adult Gerontology (APNP-AG)

Adult gerontology is the area of advanced nursing practice focused on providing healthcare for individuals in adolescence, adulthood and late age. Students who choose to concentrate in adult gerontology can further specialize their studies on either acute (emergency) gerontology to work in settings like the ICU, the ER and medical surgery care, or they can choose to focus on providing primary care to aging patients. Students complement their study of clinical practice with courses on organizational behavior and nurse leadership; thus, they can go on to become advanced practice nurse practitioners or nurse managers and executives.

BSN-to-DNP Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

Another common concentration in an online BSN-to-DNP nursing program is family nursing. Like adult gerontology, these programs last 2-3 years and prepare graduates to be advanced practice nurse practitioners (APNP). Students learn about common pediatric problems, chronic problems for adults and elders, gynecologic management, and advanced pharmacology. Graduates are qualified to care for patients across their lifespans, providing primary care for the entire family. Because they are experts in evidence-based practice, nursing and research, graduates can also go on to leadership positions in a hospital or clinic setting.

BSN-to-DNP Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

A DNP in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program prepares graduates to meet the growing demand for treatment of mental health issues in modern society. Students complement their core DNP coursework with classes on psychiatric mental health diagnosis, mental health assessment and psychiatric health management. Graduates are prepared to work with patients of all ages.

Degree information for an Online BSN-to-DNP Degree

DNP applicants who have a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), a registered nursing license and a grade point average of at least 3.0 are often exempt from submitting graduate admissions test scores, like the GRE. A 2- to 3-year online Doctor of Nursing Practice program prepares graduates for careers as advanced practice nurse practitioners, nursing managers and executives, and healthcare policy experts. While coursework varies across programs and specializations, most DNP online programs share a few similar core classes:

Biostatistics

To complete their program, DNP students must conduct original research investigating public health and biomedical issues. Early on in any DNP program, students take a course on biostatistics to become familiar with the mathematical skills necessary to successfully complete medical research. Students may have units that focus on incorporating advanced mathematics, like descriptive statistics, probability distributions, sampling distributions, inferences, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance and linear regression analysis, into their research projects. Each mathematical tool is linked directly back to nursing research.

Epidemiology

Epidemiologists study the spread of disease by analyzing massive amounts of big data. This course introduces students to the techniques and principles of epidemiology. Students can learn how to apply data analysis and statistics techniques in their own DNP research and practice projects. The syllabus may include modules on health risks, death causality and strategies to reduce negative health outcomes in distinct populations.

Evidence-Based Nursing Practice

One of the central objectives of a DNP program is to prepare nursing professionals and leaders with the tools they need to translate up-to-date research into clinical practice. DNPs close the gap between scientific discoveries in academia and best-practices in day-to-day healthcare. In this course students learn the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP), or the use of academic knowledge to improve healthcare outcomes for patients. Students practice evaluating evidence-based methods to address theoretical problems and work in groups to design their own potential solutions.

Ethics in Advanced Practice Nursing

In this course students grapple with the ethical dilemmas that may arise over the course of their nursing careers. A professor guides students through the use of various ethical principles and decision-making models. Then students may work together in groups to analyze theoretical situations.

Healthcare Policy

DNP nurses are not only clinical professionals, they are leaders, advocates and policy-changers. Students study the complex interaction between various systems that affect healthcare delivery, like hospitals, private insurance companies and federal programs (Medicare and Medicaid). They analyze and design policy solutions, taking economic and political feasibility into account. The goal of this course is to produce students who can analyze and advocate for policy to improve the healthcare system and overall healthcare delivery.

Clinicals/Practicum

Most DNP programs require students to complete at least 1,000 hours of clinical practice under the supervision of advanced practice nurse practitioners. Because these programs are administered online, students have the flexibility to choose the local healthcare setting they wish to work in. This course provides students with the structure to log their clinical hours and reflect on their growth as advanced nurse practitioners.

DNP Project

To graduate, students must complete an original research project. Students can choose their project topic and scope based on their chosen concentration, interests and career goals. They incorporate all previous coursework, particularly evidence-based research practices, into the design and implementation of their projects. In many cases, students must present their research before a panel of academic experts and/or students before completing the program.

There are a range of online BSN-to-DNP degree programs that do not require students to take the GRE. Students take a variety of classes to prepare for careers as advanced practice nurse practitioners, nursing educators, researchers and managers.
