General Requirements

In order to attain the standard license, the interested candidate must complete an approved New Hampshire Department of Education educator preparation program. The department of education maintains a list of institutions that are approved to provide these programs. For special education teachers, there are a number of options depending on which type of disability and level of school they are interested in teaching. For example, Granite State College offers a program focused on Blind and Visions Disabilities, Deaf and Hearing Disabilities, Early Childhood Special Education, Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities, General Special Education and Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities among others. The interested candidate must also satisfy certain exam requirements.

Exam Requirements

Interested candidates must pass the Basic Academic Skills Assessment (BASA) by passing the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. If the candidate is interested in specializing in early childhood education, elementary education or reading and writing, then they must also pass the Pearson's Foundations of Reading test. There are also specific Praxis assessments for the early childhood, elementary, middle school and secondary school education levels. Registration for these exams can be done online after which the applicant will be directed on how and where to complete the relevant exams. Candidates will be able to submit verification documents for their passing grades during the application process. Where exam results are concerned, candidates are responsible for ensuring their results get to the New Hampshire Department of Education when applying for a certificate.

Application Process

For the initial certificate, the candidate must be recommended by the institute where they completed their approved educator preparation program. At that point, candidates who are interested in becoming a special education teacher must initiate the application process by contacting the New Hampshire Department of Education. From there, they will be guided as to how to use the online portal. This online portal will facilitate the application for the initial certificate as well as the uploading of the certificates that verify the candidate's academic achievements and the exam results. The application fee can also be paid through the online portal.
