How to Work in Child Psychology by Earning a Graduate Degree in Clinical Psychology

For a student to enroll in a master's or Ph.D. program in clinical psychology, they must hold a baccalaureate degree with most of the courses focusing on psychology or a closely related field. Depending on how far you want to further your education, a student can expect to spend a minimum of 60 credit-hours with advanced clinical internships. There are a variety of courses in clinical psychology degree programs, but there are some general courses that one can expect to take if they wish to work in child psychology.

Developmental Psychology

This course is designed so that students may research and apply theories of psychological development over the course of one's life. This can help a student understand the changes and growth milestones in infants, children, teens, and adults.

Social Psychology

Social psychology refers to the issues an individual has with social interactions and how it affects them. Students will often apply research and theory with intensive study to understand the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals.

Child/Family/Group Therapy

The focus of this course can vary depending on schools. The mission to understand psychological issues in either individual or group therapy while working with children and families to create function. Using behavioral modes of intervention, a student should be able to apply techniques during individual and/or group therapy.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy courses can teach you to use psychological interventions, practices, and theories to treat mental disorders, rather than using medical intervention. A student can expect to use these skills with children, adolescents, and adults. Students will usually get additional training with treatment in marriage, family, and behavior therapy.

Cognitive Assessment

Commonly used in diagnosing learning disabilities, cognitive assessment courses might explore how to analyze and measure cognitive function. These strategies can be taught whether the student is pursuing a behavioral intervention, school counselor, or therapy career, to name a few.

If you wish to work with children in the field of psychology, you can expect to spend a minimum of about 60 graduate credit hours towards intensive studies in human development, cognitive assessments, psychotherapy, and behavioral intervention. In addition to the graduate-level coursework, a practicum or internship spent applying strategies and theories learned can fulfill the required hours needed towards a master's or doctoral degree.
