Admission Requirements for a DNP in New York City

Requirements for admission vary by school, but most DNP programs have some combination of the following criteria in addition to a nursing degree:

  • Qualifying GPA, such as 3.5
  • Valid R.N. or advanced practice registered nursing license
  • Professional resume with qualifying nursing experience
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal essay
  • Previous college courses in statistics and/or research (for post-master's students)

What Can You Do with a DNP?

Nurse Midwife

Nurse midwives are advanced practice nurses who typically need a master's degree in a qualifying field, but those who complete a DNP program may be better prepared to provide healthcare services or take on leadership roles. Some DNP programs allow students to specialize in midwifery, providing them with a deeper instruction in topics such as female anatomy, childbirth, and other obstetrics. Nurse midwives can provide primary care to women. They might deliver babies, provide reproductive counseling and treatment, and assist with surgeries.

Nurse Practitioner

While many positions require a master's degree, DNP programs provide an in-depth overview of nurse practitioner topics and practices, preparing students who enter with a BSN for these advanced nursing roles. Nurse practitioners often provide primary care to patients, including examinations, treatments, and consultations. Nurse practitioners often specialize in certain populations, such as adult, pediatric, and psychiatric patients. Nurse practitioners may also conduct and publish research relating to healthcare and nursing practices.

Postsecondary Nursing Instructor

Within a DNP program, students are provided with extensive instruction and practice in nursing and healthcare topics, which may enable them to educate future nurses as instructors. A doctoral degree in addition to work experience in the field may qualify individuals to teach at colleges and universities as instructors of nursing. Instructor duties may include counseling students, grading assignments, creating class schedules and activities, as well as conducting research.

Job Title Median Annual Salary (2018)* Estimated Job Growth (2018-2028)*
