DNP Programs in North Carolina (NC)

There are eight schools within North Carolina that offer either a DNP or a Ph.D. in Nursing. Programs consist of instruction and practice of nursing and healthcare related topics. Read more below.

Duke University

Duke University offers a Ph.D. in Nursing, which can be completed in under 5 years, and enables students to expand their knowledge and research skills in areas such as care systems. Many graduates of the Ph.D. in Nursing program at Duke University become nursing educators, several of whom work at the school today.

East Carolina University

East Carolina University offers programs for both a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) as well as a Ph.D. in Nursing. The DNP program allows students to choose a specialization, and prepares them for positions such as nurse practitioners and nurse midwives, while the Ph.D. program is very research-oriented, preparing students to be contributors to nursing and the field of medicine as leaders and educators.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has both a DNP program as well as a Ph.D. program for nursing. UNC-Chapel Hill's DNP program provides preparation for nursing practice through extensive training and mentorship, while the Ph.D. program seeks to create students who are driven to be a productive part of the research and other activities that enhance nursing and public health.

University of North Carolina, Charlotte

The University of North Carolina, Charlotte, offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice in partnership with Western Carolina University, which can be completed in as few as five semesters. Students expand their existing knowledge and become equipped with extensive skills for clinical practice through classroom and online instruction and activities, as well as clinical fieldwork.

University of North Carolina, Greensboro

Both the DNP and Ph.D. programs are offered at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, either of which can be completed in two years if students hold an MSN. The DNP program prepares students for leadership that may transform and improve the quality of care for patients, while the Ph.D. program provides extensive research practice and allows students to choose electives based on their areas of interest.

University of North Carolina, Wilmington

The University of North Carolina, Wilmington, offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice program, which can be completed in as little as five semesters and allows students to choose a DNP specialization. UNC Wilmington's program combines biophysical and organizational science with nursing science to prepare graduates for better understanding and practice in healthcare.

Western Carolina University

In partnership with UNC Charlotte, Western Carolina University offers a DNP program that consists of 42 semester hours, 1,000 hours of clinical work, and a scholarly project. Students study topics such as ethics, justice, and health care economics, and become more prepared for prolific positions in clinical work, administration, and education.

Winston-Salem State University

Winston-Salem State University offers a DNP program that prepares students for evidence-based practice as well as improvement of care and patient outcomes through a hybrid format, with a capstone project in the final year. The program takes an average of three years and prepares graduates for careers such as nurse practitioner, educator, health services manager, midwife, and chief nursing educator.

Admittance Requirements for a DNP Program

DNP program entrance requirements may include some of the following:

  • BSN and/or MSN with a qualifying GPA (such as 3.2)
  • Work experience as an RN
  • Valid RN license
  • Graduate entrance exam (GRE)
  • Professional resume
  • Essay/personal statement of goals
  • Professional references

Each program may have a different combination of the items mentioned above, and waive certain requirements with the fulfillment of others. For example, an applicant who has an MSN with a GPA of 3.2 may not be required to take a graduate entrance exam.

Several universities within North Carolina offer Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees, as well as Ph.D. options, which can usually be completed in two to four years depending on previous educational experience. Individuals who intend on working in fields of practice, such as nurse practitioners or nurse anesthetists, will benefit from the DNP program, while those who are more interested in research, leadership, or instruction may find more benefit in the Ph.D. program curriculum.
