Master Degree Programs in Environmental Toxicology
Master of Science in Environmental Toxicology
An MS in Environmental Toxicology can be completed as a stand-alone master's degree option, or as a specialization as part of a broader graduate program in Zoology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Food Science and Geological Sciences. Either way, this program will provide students with a solid understanding and knowledge of environmental toxicology and the impacts on human, animal and environmental health. Graduate courses can take 2-3 years to complete and require a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, a completed bachelor's degree and a strong background in biology and chemistry. If required, there may be some prerequisite courses that candidates will need to complete before starting this graduate course. Students can expect to cover topics relating to the foundations of environmental health, microbiology, environmental chemistry, and risk assessment and management.
Master of Science in Molecular and Environmental Toxicology
While a Master of Science in Molecular and Environmental Toxicology sounds quite specific, it can cover a broad range of subjects, therefore giving the student expert knowledge in both the biological and physical sciences, increasing their scope for training and exciting research opportunities, developing treatment and prevention for human disease and environmental damage. MS programs can take up to 3 years to complete. In addition to a bachelor's degree in a biological or physical science background, candidates should have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and they may be required to take further prerequisite courses. Core courses in this MS program can include topics looking at the fundamentals of toxicology, the effects of toxicants in the environment and in food.
Master of Science in Toxicology
Students who choose to complete a Master of Science in Toxicology will cover a number of topics ranging across environmental sciences, health sciences, infectious diseases, and forensic study. Toxicology programs can be completed within 1-2 years and all students will be required to complete a thesis in order to graduate with the full MS in Toxicology. All candidates must have completed a science-based bachelor's degree and have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. This broad graduate degree program can provide students with some exciting research opportunities across a number of different areas, and also will allow them to specialize in other fields at a later date.
Master of Science in Environmental Health Sciences
A Master of Science in Environmental Health Sciences covers not only environmental toxicology but also a broad range of other areas such as environmental health policy, infectious diseases, and epidemiology. Students mainly focus on the effect of the environment on human health and complete research that develops their skills in conducting in-depth research, risk assessment and identifying significant burdens on the environment. Students are required to have completed at least one year of undergraduate-level chemistry and biology, and a course in mathematics would also be beneficial, in addition to a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. A Master in Environmental Health Sciences will generally take around 2 years to complete.

Courses Common to Studies in Environmental Toxicology
Principles of Environmental Toxicology
Students will be introduced to basic concepts of chemical absorption and what their impact is on the environment (human body, animals, other organisms). This course will explore chemical interactions with biological systems, including assessing changes to biochemical, cellular and physiological makeups.
A course in environmental health explores how people relate to their environment, how the environment affects a person's well-being and look at factors that can alter or impact the surrounding environment. Students will generally work alongside experts in the field to understand how to decipher complex and often technical information as well as understanding basic principles.
Impact on Human Health
Throughout courses assessing the impact on human health from the surrounding environment, students will learn about the key elements affecting global environmental changes, how humans are contributing to this and measure they can take to be more sustainable. More specifically, students will explore the physiological and biochemical impacts the environment is having on human beings.
