Job Description

An ESL teacher will help students learn the English language in both written and verbal formats. Teachers are responsible for creating lesson plans, helping students comprehend and understand the material, and monitoring the progress that they make.

ESL teachers can work in private or public K-12 schools, along with colleges and universities.

Education Requirements

Those wishing to become an ESL teacher in Kentucky must earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree, although a master's degree or higher may help applicants secure a job. In addition to a bachelor's degree, potential teachers will need to complete training in a teacher preparation program and may take extra courses in sociolinguistics, linguistics, and maybe a foreign language class. As an ESL teacher, you could work in a K-12 setting, or college/university, so it would be during the degree and preparation program that you would need to decide what level you want to teach at.

Exam Requirements

All potential teachers will need to take and pass the Praxis II ESL which includes sections on planning, managing, assessment and listening to audio samples. A passing score is considered to be 157 or higher in the state of Kentucky. Teachers will need to prepare for the exam ahead of time by accessing the guidelines and study material on the website.

Renewal Requirements

Once a teaching license has been issued, it is valid for 5 years and it can be renewed every five years thereafter. In order to renew the first license teachers are required to take at least 15 hours of graduate level courses. In addition to this, the superintendent of the school that the teacher is with will need to verify that the teacher has taught for at least three years. If this is not a possibility, the teacher's official transcripts from his or her college will be needed along with a recommendation letter. For further renewals, the teacher will need to graduate a Master's degree program.
