Job Description

Florida Math teachers develop lesson plans, tests, and homework material, grade papers, and facilitate discussions about math and its various concepts. They are also tasked with preparing students for Florida's standardized test regimen. Additional duties often include supervising homerooms and study halls and meeting with parents, as well as potential options to proctor afterschool clubs and activities.

Education Requirements

In order to become a math teacher in the state of Florida, you must first obtain a bachelor's degree with a major in math or obtain a bachelor's degree with demonstrated competence in math. This includes passing a given number of credit hours in mathematics, as well as specific courses, based on the level you wish to be certified to teach. Those wishing to teach at a secondary level, for example, will need to complete six credit hours of calculus, with documented completion of courses in other core concept areas including algebra, geometry, and statistics.

Demonstrating General Knowledge Proficiency

The Florida Department of Education requires teachers to pass the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE). The first of these is a General Knowledge (GK) test which includes an essay section, an English language skills section, a reading section, and a mathematics section. If you hold a valid teaching certificate from another US state or territory, this can be used in lieu of the exam to demonstrate your general knowledge. You can also document at least 2 semesters worth of college teaching experience or document high scores on a recently taken GRE test.

Completing an Approved Math Educator Preparation Program

The most straightforward route to becoming certified as a math teacher in Florida is through the completion of a state-approved Initial Teacher Preparation Program (ITP). These programs are integrated into your undergraduate or graduate coursework, so earning your bachelor's degree through one of these state-approved programs is a very common route. Alternatively, you can also go through a state-approved Educator Preparation Institute (EPI), which is common for recent graduates who didn't participate in an ITP while earning their degree. If you do not complete one of these programs, you will need to instead pass a series of certification exams, including the Professional Education test and Florida Educational Leadership Examination, regarding teaching practice, theory, and leadership standards for educators.

Passing the Special Area Examination

There are 39 SAE tests, but you will only need to take either the Middle Grades Mathematics 5-9 (025) test or the Mathematics 6-12 (026) test to be certified to teach Math at either respective level. These tests consist of 75 multiple-choice questions. You will be tested on core math subjects such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, as well as instruction and assessment. Any of these Computer-based tests (CBT) can be taken at one of Florida's many CBT testing sites. After passing these exams and meeting the requirements, you can request a Professional Certificate which is valid for five school years at which point it can be renewed through your school district office.
