Colleges, universities, and non-profits offer free microelectronics courses and lessons, but most presuppose advanced knowledge in various disciplines, such as physics, mathematics, and computer programming. Most microelectronics courses also require specialized equipment to complete labs and assignments.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's OpenCourseWare program, these two free online courses will help you get started in microelectronics. One of these undergraduate courses is structured as a series of captioned video lectures with notes, while the other course has the lecture notes only, with no videos. Various assignments and exams are also included, most of which do not come with solutions. No sign-up is required to access the courses, but not all textbooks and required readings are provided. The courses presuppose knowledge of electricity, magnetism, differential equations, and access to lab equipment, such as an oscilloscope, multimeter, function generator, and protoboard. Course topics include circuit analysis, digital abstraction, impedance, semiconductors, transistors, amplifiers, and capacitors. MIT offers the following free online courses:

The Open University

This free online course from The Open University is about methods for controlling electricity in microelectronics components. The advanced course is formatted as a series of readings and lecture notes with example problems and short exercises throughout. Though most of the course is readily accessible, you will need to complete a quick enrollment process to access all course materials, like quizzes. No formal prerequisites are noted, but the course covers many upper-level physics, chemistry, and math concepts without much introductory explanation. Topics covered by the course include conductance, resonance, piezoelectricity, short range forces, damping, deposition, and etching.

Cornell University

Cornell University's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers some free online microelectronics courses focused on using microcontrollers to design microchips and circuit boards. No sign-up is required to access the course materials, which comprise video lectures, assignments, labs, projects, and all necessary readings, such as manuals. No other outside textbooks are required. The intended audience of the courses are upper-level electrical engineering students, and as such, require knowledge of embedded systems, C programming, Verilog, ARM Linux, advanced mathematics, and electronic construction. A computer, microcontroller, microcontroller evaluation board, and breadboard are needed to complete the lab activities. The following courses cover a variety of topics, including hardware concurrency, thread programming, motor control, sound synthesis, circuit layout, logic analyzers, and the physical construction of microchips:

United States Navy (Internet Archive)

The Naval Electricity and Electronics Training Series (NEETS) are self-study modules that are part of the Navy's Non-Resident Training Courses (NRTC) program. Though this program is only for military personnel, the original modules published in 1998 can be found for free online through the non-profit Internet Archive. Module 14 of NEETS is an introduction to microelectronics, and while technology has advanced significantly since 1998, many topics covered by the course still apply. It's recommended to complete the modules in order. Module 14 covers the history and terminology of microelectronics, as well as the maintenance and repair of circuit boards. Assignments are included at the end of the module to test your knowledge.
