How to Earn a Global Executive MBA

Global Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree programs are commonly offered in a hybrid format with online coursework and on-campus and/or international residencies for hands-on experience. There are even some international programs available that include international residencies in the United States, and usually these global executive MBA programs in the United States can be completed within 17 to 24 months and may offer opportunities to earn additional certificates. These programs are typically designed for working professionals wanting to further develop their leadership skills working in diverse global businesses and the curriculum usually consists of core courses, electives, and/or a capstone experience.

Strategy

Courses in strategy may examine the foundational concepts in the subject and/or provide a global perspective on making strategic decisions. Students could explore the different challenges that management faces and the various tools used to examine competitors, markets, and available strategies to make the best decision for the organization. Other specific topics for courses in strategy may include building a competitive advantage, marketing analysis, motivating teams, and developing strategies.

Marketing

Students usually take an international marketing or marketing management course that helps equip students with the skills needed to develop a marketing plan for an organization. While marketing management courses provide students with an overview of considerations for marketing decisions, courses in international marketing may focus on applying these marketing concepts to international markets. Students in either kind of course typically learn about pricing, communication, branding, consumer behavior, competitive marketing, and more.

Managerial Accounting

Classes in managerial or financial accounting help students understand the use of accounting information for decision-making purposes. Students usually receive an overview of accounting concepts used at the national and international levels and then explore ways to analyze accounting-related data. These courses may also help students learn how to design accounting systems specific to their organization, read economic transaction reports, and better understand concepts in budgeting and cost behavior.

Managerial Economics

Students in these economics courses could explore how markets work, including market structure and factors that affect market outcomes, such as decisions that the government or individual firms make. These courses are designed to help equip students with the skills necessary to analyze market conditions and make effective choices and managerial decisions based on these findings. Students may also examine the analytics involved in solving challenges in marketing and competitive strategy.

Leadership

Courses in leadership aim to further develop high-level leadership skills in executives through interactive learning opportunities. Students in these courses may discuss various leadership theories and concepts, further develop skills used to work well in teams, and/or explore leadership in cross-cultural environments. Specific topics for courses in leadership may include negotiation, conflict resolution, relationship building, communication patterns, leadership research, and cultural understanding. Depending on the program, some of these courses may include a residency portion for face-to-face interactions with peers.

Admission Requirements for Global Executive MBA Programs

Applicants to global executive MBA programs typically need to have at least a bachelor's degree and some programs may require students to meet a minimum amount of professional work experience, such as at least 3 years of work experience. Some of these programs may also require applicants to take the GRE, GMAT, or an institution-specific exam to indicate readiness for the program, but students may be able to waive these exams if they meet other criteria, such as having a minimum of 10 years of work experience or holding an advanced degree. Application materials for these degree programs vary by school, but commonly include transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a resume with prior work experience. Some programs may also require written responses to questions and/or essays discussing goals, skills, past experiences, and more. Most of these MBA programs require applicants to undergo an interview process with an admissions officer or enrollment advisor after students have submitted their application and some applications may not be considered complete until the interview is conducted.

Global executive MBA programs are usually designed for working professionals, can be completed in 2 years or less, and commonly include online coursework and on-campus and/or international residencies. Students in these programs take a range of core courses, but may be able to choose some elective courses and/or earn additional certificates to meet their educational needs.
