Graduate Degree Programs in Psychology in Alabama

Individuals interested in a graduate degree in psychology can pursue master's and doctoral degrees at Alabama institutions. The degree programs at ten schools, including graduate tuition costs, are outlined for potential students.

Troy University

Troy University offers a forty-eight-credit Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling where students will take courses in counseling theories. They will also dive into subjects like working with diverse groups of people, medical components of individuals with disabilities and evaluating and assessing patients. Students will need an overall grade point average of 3.0 to graduate.

University of North Alabama

Students can enroll in the University of Alabama's Clinical Mental Health Counseling CACREP accredited master's program, which requires sixty credits for graduation. This program provides students with training to pursue National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Certification, National Counselor Certification, and Alabama State Counselor Licensure, with career options in private practice, social service agencies, or mental health organizations.

The University of Alabama

The doctoral program in clinical psychology at the University of Alabama trains students in the scientist-practitioner model, known as the Boulder method, and offers concentrations in clinical geropsychology, clinical child, psychology and law, and clinical health. Students will begin their clinical coursework in the first year of the program. While varied, the clinical training program focuses on the areas of interpersonal process approaches and cognitive-behavioral theories.

University of South Alabama

Students will complete 60 credits for the doctoral program in clinical and counseling psychology at the University of South Alabama. They will complete practicum coursework in the university's psychological clinic, along with a one-year internship at an approved location.

University of West Alabama

The University of West Alabama awards a Master of Science in Experimental Psychology, which offers a traditional, 36-credit option that prepares students for their doctoral degrees. Students can also choose from a track in clinical psychology, which is suitable for those interested in becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor, or the health and sports psychology track, which trains students for clinical applications in those areas.

Alabama A&M University

Students can complete a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology at Alabama A&M University, which offers the following three concentrations: Clinical Psychology, School Counseling, and Rehabilitation Counseling. Graduates of the program can pursue careers as rehabilitation counselors, school counselors, family counselors, vocational counselors, or clinical mental health counselors.

Auburn University

Students must enroll on a full-time basis in Auburn University's master's program in applied behavior analysis, which is completed in twenty-one months. This program focuses on teaching students to work with people on the autism spectrum or those with intellectual disabilities and includes training in local school districts and on-campus clinic.

Auburn University at Montgomery

The Montgomery campus of Auburn University offers a Master of Science in Psychology, which has a thesis track and a practicum track. Students interested in a doctoral degree should pursue the thesis track, while those interested only in a master's degree should complete the practicum track. Interested students can apply for one of several graduate assistantships available through the psychology department.

Jacksonville State University
