Fort Hays State University

Fort Hays has three Master of Science programs in clinical, experimental, or school psychology, along with an education specialist degree. The Education Specialist degree is offered through the online school psychology program, and students come to campus for a 5-day workshop during a summer semester. This program might be good for those who want to work in a counseling position in schools.

Kansas State University

Kansas State University offers a Master of Science in Psychology or a Ph.D in Psychology. Careers for Individuals with Graduate Degrees in Psychology

Psychologist

A psychologist typically needs a Ph.D or Psy.D to work as a clinical, counseling, or research psychologist. These careers (and other specializations in the psychologist umbrella) also require that an individual have a license in their state. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that master's degree candidates might work as a psychological assistant with a doctoral psychologist's supervision.

School and Career Counselors

School counselors need a state credential and a master's degree to work one-on-one with students. Career counselors may have a private practice, work in higher education, or in career centers.

Marriage and Family Therapist

Marriage and family therapists work with individuals, couples, and families to work through relationship issues and other problems. These professionals must have a license and a master's degree to provide therapy to clients.

Rehabilitation Counselor

A rehabilitation counselor works with individuals who have a variety of challenges and disabilities to help them live independently. They can help a client's employer to understand what the employee needs or can help their clients find other resources. They must have a master's degree, and depending on the services they offer, they may be required to have a license or certification.

Licensure Requirements

School Psychologist

The National Association of School Psychologists notes that these professionals can get a conditional school specialist license, then upgrade to a professional school specialist license. The professional school specialist license must be renewed every five years.

Psychologist

To obtain licensure, an aspiring psychologist must graduate from an APA-accredited education program, and take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. They must also submit transcripts and evidence of supervised experience, as well as recommendations.

Rehabilitation Counselors

Rehabilitation counselors may need certification through the Commission for Rehabilitation Counselor Certification, which is valid for five years. Applicants take the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor exam to earn the credential.
