Physical education (PE) teachers help students develop active, healthy lifestyles that are important for their development. To become a PE teacher in Hawaii, you are required to have a bachelor's degree and complete a State Approved Teacher Education Program. Prospective teachers must pass the Core Academic Skills for Educators and the Praxis II Physical Education: Content Knowledge Exam. Job Description

Physical education (PE) teachers help students develop active, healthy lifestyles that are important for their development. PE teachers work with students to develop skills in sports, health, nutrition, and physical development. PE teachers engage with students by creating activities that make exercise-based learning engaging for students. PE teachers provide a positive influence on their students in physical and mental health. Job duties will include teaching a variety of classes, including health and nutrition classes, physical education classes, and coaching different sports. Teachers will need to develop many unit lessons for all courses taught and daily lesson plans for each class based on Hawaii state standards. PE Teachers are also responsible for implement assessments based on the appropriate objectives.

Education and Training Requirements

Prospective teachers in Hawaii need to have a bachelor's degree or higher and have completed a State Approved Teacher Education Program. This program does not need to be in Hawaii as long as it is approved in the state that the program was completed in. State Approved Teacher Education Programs include a student teaching segment. If you have a bachelor's degree and but have not completed a State Approved Teacher Education Program, you can take an Educational Preparation Program to become a Physical Education teacher in Hawaii.

Exam Requirements

In addition to educational requirements, prospective physical education teachers in Hawaii must pass the following exams to become a teacher. The basic skills test for teachers in Hawaii is the Core Academic Skills for Educators exam. This exam covers reading, writing, and mathematics. Passing scores for this test are 156 for reading, 162 for writing, and 150 for mathematics. You can be exempt from this exam if you already have a bachelor's degree. You could be exempt from the reading section if you took the SAT reading test with a score of 530 or exempt form the mathematics section if you took the SAT mathematics test with a score of 560. In addition to the basic skills test, physical education teachers must take the Praxis II Physical Education: Content Knowledge Exam. The passing score for this exam is 155.

Renewal Requirements

Standard teaching certificates in Hawaii have to be renewed every five years. To renew your certification, you have to have been teaching in Hawaii for three out of the last five years and have been maintaining the Hawaii Teacher Performance Standards. Teachers who have National Board Certification can use this as a way to renew their State of Hawaii teaching certificate. Teachers in Hawaii can also get a provisional license if they have less than three years of full-time teaching experience. Provisional licenses are not renewable.

Additionally, experienced teachers may get an advanced teaching license. To qualify for the advanced license, teachers must have a National Board Certification, have a valid standard teaching license, and have taught full-time for five years in the last eight.
