Hawaii Substitute Teacher Certification Online

Hawaii is one of the top paying states for substitute teachers and employed 2,710 substitute teachers as of May 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Learn how to become a substitute by completing an online substitute teacher training certification. Schools offering Early Childhood Education degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Substitute teachers in Hawaii work on an on-call, as-need basis, and placements are not guaranteed. To be a substitute teacher in Hawaii, you need at least a bachelor's degree (exceptions are made for certain cases by the Department of Education). However, the state prefers applicants who have completed a state teacher training program that includes student teaching. Applicants are also required to do a training course. The course can be done in person but is also available online.

Apply to Be a Substitute Teacher

Before you take the online substitute teacher certification course, you need to apply to be a substitute teacher in Hawaii. You can apply from July 1 to March 15 every school year. Apply to the school where you prefer to teach, and you can find schools on the Hawaii Public Schools website. Contact the school directly and set up an interview. Be prepared to bring a resume and college transcripts.

Enroll in the Online Certification Course

After the interview, you will get an approval notice from the school, which is needed to enroll in the substitute teacher training course. Those interested in taking the online course should contact the McKinley School (information is on the Hawaii Public Schools website). As of 2016, the cost of the online class was $70. A registration form, in addition to the approval notice, is required to enroll. The course is also available in person, at the locations listed on the Hawaii Public Schools website.

Note: If you are already a licensed teacher in Hawaii or another state, have recently graduated from a teaching college or are a retired teacher, you may be exempted from the certification course.

Requirements for the Online Course

The online course lasts seven weeks, and applicants must complete it. Spots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. It's not refundable (even if you end up not being able to attend the class for computer issues). Once completed, the certification is valid for five years.

The state provides a list of technical requirements needed to complete the online course successfully. This includes access to a computer, Internet, a web browser, an email account, a microphone and speakers and more.

Those eligible for the online course are new applicants who have a bachelor's degree or current substitute teachers who need to renew their certification after five years.

Expectations for the Course

Instructors communicate with students by email, and it is expected that students start contact with the teacher the day before the course starts.

During the class, students will be expected to communicate and work with their classmates online and participate in online discussions. It is recommended that students log on daily to stay up to date. If an applicant doesn't log on for four days in a row, the teacher may suggest that they no longer take the class.

There is an in-person written exam on the last day of class. Applicants must bring a photo ID and social security card to the exam.

Finish the Application Process

Completing the online course does not mean that you are hired. After you take the course online, you have to bring the relevant documents, including a copy of the substitute teacher course completion certificate, to the original school where you applied to be a substitute teacher.

You also have to complete a background check for employment, including fingerprinting. This process can take from two days to two months.
